“What wrong pretty girl? Are you okay?” My eyes asserted her body,

looking for clues that maybe she had hurt herself somewhere, but luckily, no

blood, no scratches and no bruises visible.

As she finally looked at me, her chubby cheeks red and wet with tears,

her lips trembling with silent sobs, she shook her head.

“I- I’m so sorry, Mads.” That was all she said before bursting into tears

and jumping on me, wrapping her small arms around my neck and burrowing

her head in my neck.

Over her shoulders, I looked at Sofia, putting aside the unease still

unsettling my stomach at the memories of what had occurred earlier. She

nodded at the kitchen, her gaze evading my own.

I looked and sure enough, there was the glass I had heard shatter.

Actually, I was surprised that my kitchen was still standing. There was

food, flour, — what I thought was orange juice? Everywhere.

On the floor, a platter with two now-broken plates and what looked like

scrambled eggs on them, some bread that hadn’t been toasted laid not too far,

and a mug filled with what looked like chocolate goo.

“Valentina wanted to surprise us with breakfast in bed,” My gaze went

back to Sofia, but hers was fixated on her little sister, who squeezed me a bit

harder, as if to apologize. “But she lost her balance while trying to take the

platter to us and— yeah.”

Not being able to look at her any more than I already had, I returned to

Valentina who was watching me with dread in her eyes and again, trembling

lips.

“I-I’m so sorry. Dada says I’m not allowed to use the stove, so I baked

everything in the microwave, it was too high though so I used a stool, then I

wanted to do the same to get the platter from the island b-but I tripped a-aand—“
