After Valentina told me about Jack and Marcella being the monsters she

was so scared off, the monsters Sofia had always protected her from, I was

livid. I don't think I'd ever felt so betrayed and angry in my life, like my

world had tilted out of its axis. I instantly jumped to conclusions, thinking

Sofia and I getting together was all part of her plan to get away with murder.

I was hurt, like never before.

But then she came in and told me everything and I wanted to puke. How

the fuck could this have been going on right under our noses without anyone

in this fucking town noticing a thing?

“This is ridiculous, Maddox!” Piersons puffed, agitated. “You cannot just

give up on your career because of one unsolved case. It happens to all great

cops, it might be your first but it won't be your last, trust me.”

“My decision is final, sir. Here is my letter.”

I handed him the paper I had spent a good chunk of the night writing, after

Sofia finally fell asleep while sobbing against my shirt.

Piersons’ lips pinched together and he looked like he wanted to say

something else, convince me of staying, but he must’ve seen the sheer

determination in my eyes because he chose to drop it instead.

He nodded angrily, taking the letter from my outstretched hand with a

clenched jaw. “Fine. I wish you well.” He sidestepped me and slammed the

door to his office, leaving only me and Adam in the hallway.

I finally looked at him and he shook his head. “I just hope you know what

you're doing, kid.”

“I do.” I gave him a small smile and a friendly tap on the shoulder before

turning around.

I hurried back to my car to get back home.
