It felt like dying.
My whole body just stopped working, my breath was stuck in my throat,
my heart ceased to beat.
No.
No, no, no, no, no. I did not go through hell and back only to have some
uptight bitch take Valentina away from me. Next to me, Maddox stopped
moving too. He gripped Valentina tighter and cleared his throat.
“I was told you would get here tomorrow.” My head snapped in his
direction.
He knew they were coming and didn’t tell me? Anger burst inside me, I
was fuming.
Of course, I knew I’d be confronted to CPS at one point or another, but
for God’s sake, our parents weren’t even buried yet.
“Yes, well, there was a change of plan and Mr. Kensley and I were
available to come today.” Her cold blue eyes then focused on me. “I gather
you’re Miss Raymond?” She didn’t wait for my answer to continue, “I’m
sorry for your loss.” But her condolences were cold and held no compassion
whatsoever.
That woman was like a robot. Cold and pragmatic. Was this really the
kind of person responsible for making sure children received the care and
love they deserved? No wonder so many kids in the system lost it.
