“You’re right. I’ll go, just please let’s start back from the beginning one
last time, maybe we missed something.”
Adam stared at me for some time before sighing and falling back down on
his desk, grabbing the Raymond file.
“Okay, one last time then I’m fucking going home, you hear me? My wife
is waiting for me.” I nodded, used to his grumpy behavior by now. “The
alarms and cameras were cut off around midnight and no alert was given to
the security company. It’s like they just ceased working. The intruders came
through the back door which Sofia could have sworn she had locked after her
but there’s no sign of infraction. We went through the list of all the employees
who had direct access to the house, but the list is short and all of them had
rock hard alibis. The housekeeper, Gloria, was out of town for the weekend
with her two sons and the maid, Emily was at a college party—”
“Are we sure about that? Could several people attest that she was there?”
I cut him off as he read the files. He gazed up at me and gave me a bored
look.
“It’s the age of social media, Maddox. Several pictures of her were taken
and posted on Instagram, look,” he handed me a few printed screenshots of
an instagram feed and indeed, the seemingly shy little maid seemed to be
having the time of her life.
“Damn, she drank all that pint of beer?” The thing was the size of her
head.
“Yup, impressive, huh? But non-consequential to our case.” I nodded, the
exhaustion of the day catching up on me.
“And those are the only two staff members with keys to the house. No
fingerprints or footprints for that matter were found on the property, but the
house was ransacked. Especially Mayor Raymond’s office; they rummaged
through it like they were looking for something specific.”
“Has his assistant been through it yet? Does he know if something is
missing and what it is?”
