I guess he was good looking, if you liked preppy boys with so much hair

gel it made it look greasy, who probably had a collection of Star Wars dolls

— sorry, figurines, displayed proudly in their room.

No shade to any Star Wars lovers, of course.

Anyways, on paper that man was a model citizen, but my gut was

screaming there was something fishy about him.

“You’re still here?” I looked up from my desk, where the file containing

the Raymond case was open, to see Selena standing against the doorframe.

I leaned back against my chair and rubbed my eyes. It was only five but

the sleepless nights I’d been pulling lately were starting to catch up on me. I

couldn’t wait to get home and see my girls.

The thought gave me pause. I didn't know when exactly I had started

thinking about them as mine but I had. They were both mine and I would do

anything in my power to help them get through life and its hardships.

“Yeah, I should probably wrap up for the day. The girls must be waiting.”

I started pulling the file back together. “What’s up?” She looked like she

wanted to say something but didn’t know how.

“You talked to Adam lately?”

I frowned, “Yeah, I mean it’s hard not to. We share a case, we work

together on the daily. Why?”

Selena rubbed her arm, shaking her head. “He just seems out of it. I think

this case brought back bad memories for him.”

“I know what you mean. I’ll talk to him and see if he wants to check out

for a bit. A break would do him good.” She nodded and went to add

something when a uniformed officer came barging into my office, looking out

of breath.
