I grabbed the cake as Valentina started singing Las Mañanitas with all
her heart. She’d tried to teach me earlier but my Spanish accent was so bad I
was actually ashamed of trying.
Next year, though, I promised myself I’d have learned enough to sing it to
her. Next year and all the ones after, because these girls were never leaving
my side.
We put twenty candles on the cake and Sofia blew them out looking happy
as ever. Tears shone in her eyes as she sat in the midst of a dozen pillows,
surrounded by people who truly cared about her.
People who loved her.
