Valentina stopped playing with her dolls as soon as she heard the bell and

looked at me with anguished eyes. I got up from the sofa, smiling reassuringly

at her, even when my own heart was beating fast. I didn’t know who was

behind that door, and I hated that fact.

My hand shook a little as I grabbed the knob, but I pushed myself to

unlock the door and pull it open.

I wasn’t ready for who was behind it.

A redhead with a gorgeous red dress, highlighting every curve of her

gorgeous body stood on the other side of the door, holding a big plate that

smelled positively delicious in her hands. She had a big white smile that

immediately vanished when she saw me, replaced by a confused frown.

“Oh. Who are you?” She asked, looking me up and down. I felt

underdressed even though I shouldn’t have. If anything, she was the one

overdressed. Who wore stilettos to deliver food?

“Excuse me? I live here.”

“Oh. Oh! You’re the poor little orphan girl Maddox took in!” My

eyebrows nearly touched my hairline at her words.

I couldn’t believe she’d just said that. A part of me wanted to punch her

in the face for belittling me like that, while another one just wanted to burst

out laughing.

I exhaled and did neither. “I’m neither poor nor little. You are?”

“I’m Giorgianna, the neighbor from down the hall. Well, I came to see

Maddox. I know he rarely has time to cook so I made him lasagna.” She

smirked, assessing me again, “My nonna’s recipe, he loves it.” She smirked,

shrugging like it was no big deal.

Right. For a second I wondered if the lasagna was the only thing from that

girl Maddox loved to eat but then I refrained. Those thoughts were better
