may sound insane for those who didn’t believe in it, but Valentina was my

true soulmate, she was and always would be my favorite person in the world,

the one I would do anything for.

I’d been taking care of her since she was a child. Hell, I was a child

myself. So much in fact that the lines between sisterhood and motherhood

blurred. I would love to have a family one day, even though I didn’t really

think it could be in the cards for me, but Valentina would always remain the

first person I’d felt like a mother to.

As we arrived at the park, the playground was full of boisterous kids

screaming and running around. I noticed a mom squad sitting not far from

them, all in velvet tracksuits and puffy jackets holding coffee mugs. I gulped.

Whoever said kids were mean clearly had never met Lakestone’s mom

squads. They were judgmental, frustrated little shits. Mean girls who peaked

in high school and never got out of that phase.

Valentina and I stopped in front of the gates, just taking in our

surroundings.

“You know I love you, right mama?” She whipped her face towards me

and nodded, still holding my hand.

“I love you too. You’re my favorite person in the whole wide world. And

not just because you’re my sister.” I smiled and squatted down to come face

to face with her.

“You’re my favorite person too.” I caressed her cold cheeks, because

winter was coming sooner than anticipated this year.

“Is it okay if Maddox is my second favorite person?” She asked

sheepishly, like she thought I would reprimand her. “I know it’s only

temporary, until we can leave and start elsewhere, but…” she shrugged, not

knowing how to finish her sentence and I felt my heart squeezing.
