But hearing her cry in her sleep, not even aware she was doing it, seeing

how careful and protective she became around Valentina, even more so than

usual, I just had to do something.

“Sofia, you have to listen to me, after everything that happened it’s

evident you have to—”

“I will not see a shrink, Maddox,. Don’t you fucking dare suggest it

again.” I clamped my mouth shut at the cutting tone she suddenly used.

See, if there was one thing you had to know about Sofia Raymond it’s that

she was the most infuriating, hard-headed, foul-mouthed and hotheaded little

minx I’d ever met. She made me fucking crazy, especially when she wouldn’t

even let me speak and explain myself.

She joined me at the station for lunch and we were currently in my office,

just finishing up our shrimp tacos.

When I first said the dreadful words, “Sofia, have you ever thought of

going to a therapist after what happened with your parents?” she stopped

right in her tracks, put her half-eaten tacos down and simply said ‘no’. Then

she went back to eat as if nothing happened.

Then I made the bad decision to mention Mindy, the police psychologist

she’d already dealt with, and she started getting mad and shutting down, not

leaving room for any discussion.

“There’s no shame in having to talk to someone, Sofia. Actually, I also

wanted to talk to you about getting Valentina therapy.” That’s when all hell

broke loose.

Her food forgotten, Sofia got up and started pacing my small office.

“My sister already has someone to talk to, Maddox, me! We don’t need a

shrink to tell us what to think and how to feel! Valentina wouldn’t be

comfortable talking to a stranger and neither would I, end of discussion.” She

tried grabbing her things and hightailing it out of my office but I was quick to

grab her wrist.
