I thought seeing all the blood triggered her and all the tears she had kept
locked up tightly inside finally found their way out. I had to do something
about it. I couldn’t stand here and watch my woman destroy herself because
she kept everything bottled up.
She was shaking on my lap as she muttered incomprehensible words
under her breaths. I heard “sorry” and “blood”, but other than that I wasn’t
even sure it was English she was speaking right then.
Sofia had a habit of switching to Spanish whenever she was feeling
strongly, whether it was anger, anxiety, joy, fear or, like right now, shock.
Throughout all of this, I said nothing, busy trying to understand and put
words on my own emotions. I simply rubbed her back, letting her bury her
face in my neck and inhale my scent, thinking maybe it would reassure her,
ground her.
One of my hands rubbed her thighs as the other played with her smooth
hair. Eventually, she calmed down, only sniffling from time to time.
“She’s okay, baby. Andrea is with her, she said it was probably only her
period coming in early. Nothing bad.”
“H-her period? But she’s nine.” She pulled away slightly to look at me.
Wet, red rimmed eyes met my own, the tip of her nose taking on a rosy shade
too. I kissed it, unable to resist.
“I know, but apparently it can happen sometimes.” She sniffled, looking
relieved and dejected at the same time. “It’s okay. I’m sure Andie will know
what to tell her. Plus, Valentina is smart, she’ll understand.” Sofia didn’t
answer, she just let her head fall back against my chest as she sat sideways
on my lap.
She laid still for a few minutes and I didn't say anything as I simply
appreciated the fact that I got to hold her.
“I’m sorry I yelled at you, Maddox.”
