I let myself fall back against the couch and sighed. “We’re good. We’re

fine, her school is having a Daddy-daughter dance in two weeks. I officially

asked her today. Sofia will probably send you the pictures given how

ridiculous I looked.” I chuckled but she didn't.

“Yeah, I’d love to see that.”

“Okay, Andie? You're seriously starting to worry me. Is everything okay?

Are you in trouble right now? Only answer yes or no.” Now, that earned a

slight chuckle from her.

“I’m good, Maddox. I just wanted to check on you. I know I— I’ve been

distant lately, but I think I just needed to get my thoughts in order.” I nodded

even though she couldn't see me.

“I get you, sis, truly. You don’t have to explain yourself to me if you need

some time away from family. I know we can be overbearing sometimes.” She

didn’t say anything and for the longest time none of us spoke. It’s like we

were both lost in our own thoughts.

She eventually said she had to go, though so I said goodnight. Told her to

come by the apartment sometime with Adrianna, Valentina would love that.

Tossing my phone on the couch next to me, I was fully intent on going back to

studying this case.

But that was without counting on the little steps I heard coming from the

hallway.

“Mads?”

Of course Valentina would wake up now. I cursed, ready to push all the

papers and pictures back into the file when her arms suddenly encircled me,

halting my movements.

“What’s wrong, pretty girl?” I put a hand on her back and she leaned

against me, her head hitting my shoulder in an awkward hug.
