thing about him were his eyes. They truly were the window to his pure,

beautiful, soul.

I gulped, looking away, not wanting him to think I was a creep for staring

for so long.

“It’s okay. We took everything we needed the other day, the rest doesn’t

matter.”

“Yeah, but it doesn’t make it okay. This is your and Valentina’s home.” I

bit my lip to keep from replying and he continued. “This just fucked up our

case, big time. Now there’s no way of knowing if that debt book was—“ He

stopped and frowned, like something suddenly clicked in his mind.

“Sofia, what do you know about Conan?” My heart missed a beat and I

looked back at him.

“Why? Do you think he could have been linked to this?”

“Everything is possible, we’re working every angle here.”

I sighed. “I never liked him. He— he makes me uncomfortable and I’d

rather not be alone with him if I can help it.” I was surprised I was able to

talk about it so truthfully.

This was just another example of how much I trusted Maddox, words just

naturally came out of my mouth whenever I was with him. It was also an

example of why I didn’t trust myself with him. Not controlling what I said in

his presence was not something I could afford to do.

“Did he ever do something to you?” My heart squeezed at having to lie,

but I knew it was inevitable.

That was part of the one thing I could never tell him, or anyone else. The

one secret only Conan and I were aware of now, the one piece of information

I swore I would take to my grave.
