looked up, I saw Maddox was the reason why. He sent the reporter a death
glare before lightly shaking the hand he used to punch him and gently taking
my arm to help me walk towards the car.
Valentina was waiting for us inside the SUV with another officer I
recognized as Detective Yakori, Maddox’s colleague.
The woman looked angrily at Maddox when we finally got in and
Valentina hurried to sit on my lap as my arms encircled her. I was breathing a
little better now that I was away from all these vultures. As soon as the door
was closed, detective Yakori lost it.
“What the hell Maddox!” She seethed “You hit one of these bastards in
front of everyone! These people have fucking cameras, you’re gonna make
the headlines come tomorrow morning! Chief Piersons will be pissed!”
I swallowed and looked at Maddox who seemed unbothered by the things
she mentioned. He clearly didn’t regret what he just did even though there
sure were gonna be consequences. I suddenly felt guilty because it would be
my fault if he got in trouble with his boss. Or worse— if he got taken off the
case.
My blood ran cold at the thought. Maddox was the only one I trusted
enough to bring this case to its end.
“He knew better than to put his hands on her, Selena.” Was his answer,
and the look on his face didn’t leave any room for argument. Detective
Yakori— Selena, seemed to understand and didn’t press the issue but she
still glowered at Maddox. I had a feeling she would have ripped him a new
one had we not been in the same car.
Her attention was pulled back to me and her eyes softened a bit before
she nodded at me, “How are you?” She asked.
