“You did what you had to do to protect your own, Sofia.” Adam’s voice

pulled me out of my reverie. “You don’t have to feel guilty about that.” It

sounded a lot like he was speaking from experience.

She didn’t answer, simply nodded and gave my hand one last squeeze

before pulling away. I immediately missed her warmth. It got me wondering

who was anchoring who.

“I think we have enough for today, you’re obviously still in shock and we

wouldn’t want to add to that, Miss Raymond.” Adam told her in an almost

fatherly manner, before turning to me. “I’ll go see if Mindy is done with

Valentina, make sure she calms down before you join me out front.

Journalists are still here and something tells me she wouldn’t want them to

see her like that.” I nodded and he gazed at Sofia one last time before

stepping out of the room.

She was drying her tears using her jacket’s sleeve, her face was red and

puffy and her eyes looked exactly how you’d expect someone who sobbed

their heart out for the last hour or so to.

I wanted to take her pain away, to hug her and give her comfort, but I

knew I couldn’t. First, because it wouldn’t be professional, and second

because it might give her the wrong idea.

After a few minutes, she stood up, straightening her back and looked me

dead in the eye. Her beautiful face showed no emotions.

“I’m ready.”

Back at the hotel, Valentina and Sofia went straight to the elevator,

ignoring the insistent stares and questioning looks. The little girl was clinging

even harder onto her sister than she had been before the meeting with Mindy.

The psychologist wanted to see her again, because she apparently didn’t get
