One of these few details being my gut feeling, and Lord knew we could

not build a case with that only.

Conan was the one to organize everything—maybe that’s why he felt so

entitled to sitting in the front like he was fucking family, and I had to say it

looked decent for now.

I could also see he heeded Sofia’s only request that there wouldn’t be any

picture of their parents, for Valentina’s sake. She was scared to death that

seeing them would trigger a panic attack from her younger sister, just like she

had explained to me the day we went back to their house.

“Dear friends and family, we gather here today to say goodbye to two

beloved members of our community…” Father Gareth started and everyone

listened attentively.

Valentina’s head fell against Sofia’s arm, and I could imagine the little

girl’s eyes brimming with tears and closing of their own accord. Neither

sister had shed a tear coming here, and that worried me. The way they didn’t

talk about their parents’ death, the way they totally shut down their emotions

whenever it was mentioned, that couldn’t be healthy.

I heard Sofia sob into her pillow last night after our little conversation,

and it had gutted me not to do anything about it. I yearned to open her door

and take her in my arms, make her feel better any way I could.

I wanted to touch her, feel her, taste her, but my brain was stronger than

my desires. Thank God for that, really.

The last thing we needed was to complicate things by starting a physical

relationship. Not only that but I was pretty sure I could never have just a

physical relationship with Sofia. She was the only woman I’d ever wanted to

own in every sense of the word.

I wanted everything: her body, her heart and her soul.

Not only that, but I kind of wanted to give her mine, too.
