“Yeah? How about all the love you keep on showering my sister with?

How about the fact that the mere mention of your name brings a smile to her

face? How about the fact that you hug me in your arms every time I have a

nightmare and let me cry my eyes out against your chest, sometimes for

hours? You tried every fucking thing under the sun to close this case, to bring

us closure, and don’t you dare think we don’t know that. That counts more

than any results you might have had from this case.”

I pushed him again and again until his back hit the window. He looked

down on me with a scorching gaze. Fuck, there wasn’t a time I didn’t want

this man.

“And so what if you didn’t find out who that second man was, huh? Who

cares? I killed the first man. He’s done for, the second one won’t be coming

back for us. I’m not even sure he came for our parents the first time, maybe

Piersons is right and it was a robbery gone wrong.” His eyes left mine and he

just looked down, defeated. I bit my lips, looking away, before letting my

head fall against his chest.

Both of us were breathing harshly. I could feel the erratic beat of his heart

against my cheek, it was comforting. Everything about being in Maddox’s

arms was comforting. Sometimes I just wanted to bury myself in his chest so

I could rest against his heart and hear it beat to a steady rhythm.

“Please let it go. The last thing I want is to see the man I’m falling in love

with spiral out of control. We lost our parents, don't let us lose you too.”

Hands gripping his shirt, head against his chest, I just closed my eyes and let

myself be soothed by the sound of his beating heart.

His fingers came up to my hair and started playing with it briefly before

he hugged me tight to his chest. No more words were spoken, just the sounds

of our breaths mixing and creating one single symphony.

Heaven was in his arms.

But I still had to give him hell for the things he said yesterday.
