Looking up into the interrogation room where she presently sat, fiddling

with her fingers and looking down at her hands, the one-way mirror gave me

free reign to stare without worrying about her catching me.

Her eyes were always the window to her soul, you could usually tell

what she was thinking just by staring through them. So it scared the shit out of

me that all I saw when I looked at them since last night was nothingness. Her

eyes were void. The only times they filled with anything remotely close to

emotions, were when she interacted with her sister or when she was angry.

Other than that it was as if the old Sofia was dead.

“Poor girls…” Adam brought my attention back to him. He stood next to

me, shaking his head while looking into the room where only Sofia sat. “So

young and already been through so much.”

Valentina was with the force’s psychologist, Mindy Sheffield, who was

having a hard time getting the youngest Raymond to speak to her, from what I

heard. I found myself nodding absentmindedly.

As soon as we’d come in, they were both ushered to Chief Piersons’

office for paperwork, before Mindy came to take Valentina with her. The

little girl refused to go, she cried and gripped her older sister like her life

depended on it. Sofia wasn’t too keen on letting her go alone either. She’s a

naturally distrustful person, and has always been particularly protective of

her younger sister. It made sense that after an experience as traumatic as the

one they were faced with yesterday, they would be even more on the

defensive.

After half an hour of trying to convince Valentina and Sofia to let the

younger Raymond talk to Dr. Sheffield, they both finally relented. Valentina

went with her while Sofia followed us to the interrogation room where she

was now sitting, tapping her foot on the floor incessantly. I snatched my eyes

from her and looked at Kenny. I nodded and he nodded back. It was time.

As soon as we entered the room, Sofia’s eyes found mine. That was

something I noticed early on, wherever we were, her eyes would always

look for me first. I don’t really know why that knowledge made my heart
