"Maddox, are you sure you want to do this?” Adam’s anguished voice
came from beside me. “There’s no turning back after that.” I pinched my lips
as I read the name plastered on the door in front of me.
Deputy Chief Piersons in gold lettering stared back at me.
“I know. I have to do it, Adam. It’s only right."
“Fuck what is right man, I don't know in what world you’re living but
what you're about to do right now? There’s nothing fucking right about it.” He
seemed annoyed with me, and it honestly saddened me, knowing I had
disappointed him somehow.
Adam was a great friend but I did see him as a father figure, sometimes
too. I wasn’t super close to my own dad, our relationship was pleasant and
nice but it really didn't give anything more than that. Adam took me in as soon
as I started here, I knew his family, he often came over to watch games and
we occasionally went out for drinks from time to time. Most of all, we
talked. I knew I could confide in him.
So yeah, I understood why he reacted the way he did when I told him the
news.
“Come on, man. Just think it through.” I looked at him and shook my head.
My decision was made.
Piersons’ voice coming from behind us broke our staring contest.
“Detectives? To what do I owe the pleasure?” We turned around but I
could still feel Adam’s eyes on me.
