“You watched me sleep for that long? That’s kinda creepy.” I tried to

alleviate the tension, and he broke into a small, tired smile.

“I had a lot to think about. It’s actually a miracle I could think at all given

how loud you snore.” His small smile turned into a smirk and I gasped before

hitting his shoulder.

“I do not snore!”

“Oh but you do. It’s cute though.”

Whatever I was gonna say got stuck in my throat and I could feel my

cheek redden. I was grateful that the only source of light came from the

window, that way he couldn’t notice the effect his words had on me.

“I’m gonna adopt her.” I blurted. “Come tomorrow I’m getting in all the

work necessary to officially adopt her, become her guardian, whatever it’s

fucking called, but I’m not letting anyone take her away from me again.”

It was Maddox’s turn to tense up, breaking the playful atmosphere that

had taken over the room and replacing it with a strained one. He got up and

started pacing in front of the bed.

“You can’t do that Sofia. You won’t have access to your trust fund until

you’re 21 and you can’t raise a child on a barista salary.” His words weren’t

harsh, his tone was actually soft, yet the blow they delivered hurt all the same

because I knew that was how a court of law would reason too.

“Watch me.” I said through gritted teeth, getting to my feet in front of him.

He still towered over me but not nearly as much as he did when I was sitting.

“I’ll take two jobs if need be, or, fuck it, even three!”

“Oh yeah? And what about college? Where will you find the time to study

and attend your classes while you work three fucking jobs, Sofia?” He spat,

clearly getting angry with me.

I was used to it, anger was the main emotion Maddox Brooks felt

whenever I was near him. I’d had years of practice when it came to dealing
