Between 2001 and 2003 the total waste generated for the UNU Centre decreased by 1.0% by
weight for general and waste, and decreased by 10% by volume for cans bins and plastic waste. In
particular there were reductions in recyclables (10%), kitchen waste (2%), Cans (49%), Bins (4%)
We cannot obtain an overall total of waste generated to fully determine whether our total waste
generated was reduced by 5% between 2001 and 2003.
The cost of waste disposal (excluding industrial waste) for the UNU Centre (refer to fig. 2) between
2001 and 2003, stabilised at ¥1.5 million. Although in 2002 there was a significant rise in the
(the UNU also disposed of all the waste that had occupied this location).
Brief description of UNU ISO 14001 EMS
The entire EMS is described in the EMS Manual produced as one of the UNU’s ISO 14001 documents.
Its brief introduction is given here. With the UNU Rector directly involved as key decision
