Abstract:
One of the best ways to prevent grapevine diseases caused by intra and intercellular pathogens is
to detect, before plantation, if the vegetal material is pathogen-free. As grapevine nursery, Mercier
Company has a strong sanitary diagnostic strategy to provide grafted plants as clean as possible.
Viruses’ diagnostic has been used routinely for more than 20 years now by Mercier. Leafroll Viruses
(GLRaV-1, -3) and Nepoviruses (ArMV & GFlV) are systematically and regularly looked for in
rootstock and scion mother-blocks by ELISA technology. In the last few years, Mercier NOVAT-
ECH, part of the Mercier Group, has developed new diagnostic methods, more sensitive, by PCR
technology, to detect other grapevine pathogens (fungi responsible for ESCA, Eutypa Dieback,
Black Foot Disease and Bot. Cankers, Agrobacterium vitis, Flavescence Dorée, Bois Noir…). But
all these methods are only qualitative (determining the presence or the absence of the pathogens
into the plants). With the help of new biotechnologies (qPCR, LAMP, microarray…), it will be
possible soon to detect more pathogens and to quantify them. Mercier NOVATECH will present
those great improvements for grapevine pathogens control.

INTRODUCTION
There are two kinds of pathogen diseases, those which could be controlled by pesticides
and those incurable. For perennial productions as grapevine production, preventive diagnostic
is the only way to control incurable diseases. Laboratory testing for grapevine
