averages for the irrigated vine were MSD 101.99 m, DR 106.08 m and DG 3.78 m.
The data presented as a CumSum chart (figs. 1, 2) shows that the stem diameter of the
rain fed vine was kept constant till the flowering period as the daily shrinkage was offset
by the daily recovery. After flowering, the daily shrinkage was not totally offset and the
stem diameter was decreasing constantly. At the onset of veraison, DR was larger than
the shrinkage and the stem grew larger but not enough to reach the size it had before
flowering. This resulted on a net decrease of the stem diameter from flowering to the
end of the reading period.
The stem diameter of the irrigated vine fluctuated before the flowering but the overall
result of that period was an unchanged diameter. Once the irrigation started after flowering,
the stem grew larger as the daily shrinkage was surpassed by the recovery. In late
July, the recovery was smaller than the shrinkage and the diameter decreased. When the
irrigation was suspended in mid-August, there was a sudden change in the daily pattern
but the decrease continued only to recover in the later days of the observation period
and the result was a net gain of the stem diameter.
