the world’s largest brewery group.<br />
had been discovered early on in the Netherlands, and it<br />
soon continued its unstoppable triumphant procession<br />
through Germany. Certainly, coffee and tea were better<br />
for the public health than the eternal beer soup. But coffee<br />
remained a luxury for many years which only wealthy citizens<br />
could afford. Bremen’s significance as a trading centre<br />
for coffee grew from 1815 after the end of the Napoleonic<br />
Continental System.<br />
Ships from Bremen brought thousands of emigrants to the<br />
“New World”, to America. For the return journey, the brigs<br />
and barques were filled with cotton, tobacco and coffee.<br />
At times, Bremen was the largest transhipment centre for<br />
coffee on the German market. Today, every second cup of<br />
coffee drunk in Germany still comes from Bremen. Brands<br />
such as Jacobs, Melitta, Westhoff, Azul and IO originated<br />
here. Smaller coffee roasters such as Lloyd Caffee or<br />
Münch hausen have survived the concentration trends in<br />
the coffee industry and found their future in market<br />
niches. The Contigo brand stands for fair-trade coffee.<br />
The Coffein Companie, world market leader for decaffe in -<br />
ating coffee, is a scarcely known name. The decaffeinating<br />
procedure was developed and patented in 1905 by<br />
Bremen coffee merchant Ludwig Roselius. Today, his Kaffee<br />
HAG is for many still the epitome of decaffeinated coffee.<br />
At the start of the 20th century, several companies were<br />
working at how to decaffeinate coffee. Roselius was the<br />
first who succeeded in breaking down the coffee bean in<br />
chemical terms so that the stimulant caffeine could be<br />
removed. He also managed to provide his “Kaffee-Handels-<br />
Aktiengesellschaft” with sufficient funds to afford largescale<br />
advertising campaigns to make Kaffee HAG well<br />
known, thus heralding its economic success. Roselius was<br />
one of the first German entrepreneurs to import the efficient<br />
working methods used in the USA on the conveyor
