Civic commitment is a shaping element of Bremen’s
identity. Corporate Social Responsibility is the new face
for the common good.
“You have warmed our hearts as citizens of Bremen”. Just
one voice from a choir of enthusiastic reactions. People
stood speechless and looked up amazed at the façade,
grabbed their cameras and were dazzled by the delicately
gilded figures, ornaments, arches and inscriptions, as well
as the copper roof glittering reddish brown in the sunlight
together with all the new dormer windows. This was what
happened in October 2009 when they took the scaffolding
away and it still happens nearly every day on Bremen’s
Marktplatz: the Schütting building, more than 475 years
old and now thoroughly refurbished according to strict
historical precepts, presents itself to the viewer in the
“new lustre of old beauty”, to quote the Weser-Kurier
newspaper.
The two-storey building in the Italian renaissance style is
home to Bremen Chamber of Commerce and at the same
time embodies the city’s merchant spirit. The business
