Die Sail zieht alle fünf Jahre Hunderttausende
Besucher nach Bremerhaven.
Sail is an event that attracts hundreds and thousands of
visitors to Bremerhaven every five years.
ALWAYS WORTH A VISIT
Definitely worth packing your bags: with a multitude
of places of interest and science centres, Bremen and
Bremerhaven are entertaining and eventful. Tourists
from near and far like to stay here, sometimes for just
one day, sometimes for several nights.
Martha Hüner was 17 years old in 1923 when she emigrated
to America on a ship from Bremerhaven. Her suitcase
also included a horse grooming brush – a farewell
present from her father. He was convinced that his daughter
would marry a cowboy in America. But instead, she
tied the knot with a German baker – and the brush was
just used to sweep the crumbs off the bread shop counter.
Today, nearly a hundred years later, the brush is on display
in the German Emigration Centre in Bremerhaven. Together
with many letters, photos and documents, it tells
Martha’s story as an example of what happened to the
more than seven million emigrants who set off from
Bremerhaven for the New World, full of hopes and dreams.
