The drop tower in the Centre of Applied Space Technology and Micro -
gravity (ZARM) is used by Bremen’s scientists to simulate gravity.

Expertise from the drop tower to the marine world: the
State of Bremen is a key research location in Germany,
with cooperation as one of its strengths.
From 0 to 170 kilometres per hour in 0.2 seconds: no
sports car can do that. But Torsten Lutz and his colleagues
in the Centre of Applied Space Technology and Micro -
gravity (ZARM) at the University of Bremen manage this
crazy acceleration every day. “In fractions of a second, a
catapult flings a capsule up at this speed in our 146 metre
high drop tower; on reversing direction it then comes
back down again just as quickly”, says the engineer. The
reward for all this effort is the weightlessness generated in
the capsule during this process. Scientists then have maximum
9.3 seconds to perform experiments without being
subject to gravity. This is enough time to research new
combustion processes or fluid mechanical phenomena,
and costs far less than booking experiment time in the
international space station ISS.
