grow. Demographic change and a growing awareness of
health issues will turn the healthcare sector into a market
of the future with good prospects. In addition, the health
sciences are one of the five scientific profiles of Bremen as
a science location, pooling know-how and institutes
pooled right across all the disciplines.
Healthcare Sector Northwest
A new node in the healthcare market is the Healthcare
Sector Northwest, an association set up in 2010 to provide
a platform for more than 60 members from different
branches of the healthcare sector in the region. The members
include the Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the
skilled crafts sector, manufacturing companies, hospitals,
statutory health insurance providers, health initiatives,
research, science and economic development. The key
incentive is to proceed with networking across sector
borders to improve the health service.
In particular, the association is also a platform for companies,
given the new attention being focused on company
health management. One provider here is Ge.on. Its psychologists
and social therapists offer companies throughout
Germany advice and support in health and prevention
issues. Company fitness is also the driving force behind
the Ritterhude company Qualitrain or also Hansefit of i2c
idea|2|consulting. Pioneering cooperation activities take
place as well, for example between Bremer Heimstiftung
and Bremen savings bank in the search for new solutions
to care and dementia.
The hospital landscape and medical profile
The State of Bremen has 14 hospitals with around 30 special
departments and about 12,000 employees, 3,600
doctors working in general practice and more than 110
care facilities. According to Bremen Economic Development,
every third patient comes from the surrounding

St.-Jürgen-Straße and Bismarckstraße on the construction
of Bremen’s most modern hospital which with an investment
budget of around 265 million Euro will also be one
of the largest clinics in Germany. Here too the motto for
the future consists in concentrating the services and
networking the departments. While in the past, Bremen-
Mitte hospital was accommodated in pavilions covering
a surface area of around 20 hectares, in future it will have
a compact new building on just six hectares. The land
released in this way will be used for a completely new
district: the Hulsberg quarter.
The new hospital is being built by Gesundheit Nord, the
municipal clinic group with a market share of around 70
