But the orchestra is certainly not the only cultural institution
from Bremen to achieve worldwide esteem. The same
can also be said for the Kunstverein with its Kunsthalle (art
gallery), which constantly sends works of art from its treasure
trove all over the world. In 2013 for example, it sent
Claude Monet’s “Camille” to the New York Metropolitan
Museum of Art, as well as a large room installation by John
Cage to the Ludwig Múzeum Budapest. In turn, the Kunst -
halle is also in a position to bring pictures and objects d’art
from significant museums, galleries and private collections
to be featured in its exhibitions.
Such international activity is on the one hand a financial
necessity for the two named institutions, but on the other
hand it would be doomed to failure if the artistic quality
did not meet the bill. The Kunstverein, with around 8,500
members one of the three largest of its kind in Germany,
has acquired a high international reputation through its
