Handling seaborne cargoes and providing logistics
services comprise the key economic sector in the two-city
state. This is where bremenports GmbH & Co. KG is to
be found: the public company operates the infrastructure
of the twin ports on behalf of the Free Hanseatic City of
Bremen.
As a central partner for the economy, bremenports maintains
close contact with shipping, port companies and the
logistics industry to ensure continuous further development
of the world port. The company has implemented
complex construction projects such as Container Terminal
4 (completed in 2008) and the Kaiserschleuse lock (2011),
and is currently preparing the planning stages for a further
major project with the Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven.
This port facility will be built on the banks of the river
Weser and make a major contribution to the future of the
location as a leading European centre for the offshore
wind industry and logistics.
As well as port planning, bremenports puts great effort
into the technical maintenance of the maritime infrastruc -
ture, consisting of the sea locks, quays, roads, railway tracks
and other facilities in which the two-city state has invested
billions of Euros. With its dredging operations, bremenports
ensures the necessary water depths for shipping in
the port. In addition, bremenports is responsible for marketing
at home and abroad not just for the port locations
of Bremen and Bremerhaven but also for its own logistics
and specific nautical know-how. Dike construction and
flood defences round off the task profile.
Maritime environmental protection runs through the work
of bremenports like a red thread. The approach is holistic:
planners create new infrastructure to give people more
jobs. At the same time, they allow for the emergence of
ecologically valuable compensation areas. The “greenports”
sustainability strategy developed by bremenports has introduced
standards to put Bremen and Bremerhaven on
the path to becoming “green” ports – from the sensitive
handling of dredged material through to the introduction
of the Environmental Ship Index (ESI). This creates the
basis for granting shipowners discounts on the port fees
when using particularly environmentally friendly ships.
