This must surely be the pinnacle of more than 40 years
of history: since June 2012, the University of Bremen has
become one of Germany’s eleven Universities of Excellence.
It was with its overall concept for a sustainable
future for the University of Bremen entitled “Ambitious and
Agile” that the University scored its success in the Excellence
Initiative launched by the Federal Government and
the Federal States. This success has been possible because
the marine Excellence Cluster “The Ocean in the Earth
System – MARUM” and the Social Sciences Graduate
School “Bremen International Graduate School of Social
Sciences” (BIGSSS) also receive funds from the Excellence
Initiative.
Even though the Excellence Funds are solely for research,
the students in turn also benefit, with a larger number
of outstanding scientists on the teaching staff – from
Germany and from abroad. The campus will become even
more international in the next few years. As graduates of
a University of Excellence, students will find themselves
in a very good position on the job market once they have
finished their courses.
The University of Bremen is based on two strong pillars:
science and engineering on the one hand, and social
sciences and humanities on the other. It offers attractive
educational facilities to nearly 20,000 students from
Germany and abroad, with courses in 100 subjects. For
many years now, the University of Bremen has been one
of the top-league research establishments among German
universities. In 2012, its scholars and scientists acquired
100 million Euro in research funds, corresponding to about
one third of the entire university budget.
For more than four decades, the University of Bremen has
remained true to its guiding principles. It is open for reforms,
takes an outgoing Hanseatic approach, welcomes
discussion and acts as a place of cultural interaction.
It confronts the urgent issues of our time, seeking to share
experience with the public sector and social institutions.
Science is a beacon of hope for the Federal State – and
the University of Bremen is the crucial motor driving this
development.
