The German Emigration Centre was opened in 2005.
Every year, around 200,000 visitors discover Martha
Hüner’s story and many others as well. An extension was
opened in 2012 with a focus on immigration to Germany.
The German Emigration Centre is located directly on the
Neuer Hafen and is part of the Havenwelten, which have
helped Bremerhaven to become a real tourism magnet
over the last ten years.
In 2012, the city counted about 360,000 overnight stays
and around 180,000 guest arrivals. Ten years previously,
there had been just 200,000 overnight stays and about
93,000 arrivals. Increasing numbers of tourist pack their
bags to follow in the footsteps of the emigrants or to
investigate what’s happening to the climate.
Klimahaus, Zoo am Meer, Sail
The Klimahaus® Bremerhaven 8° Ost takes visitors around
the world in just a few hours, where they can experience
the Alpine coolness of Swiss mountain pastures, the furnace
of the Sahel or the bitter cold of the Antarctic. Every
year, the tour along the eighth degree of longitude takes
more than 550,000 visitors through scenery designed
exactly according to the original locations.
The immediate neighbourhood also offers the German
Maritime Museum and the zoo by the sea. This was reopened
again in 2004 following a three-year reconstruction
phase. Polar bears, seals, penguins and gannets attract
around 250,000 visitors every year; a new aquarium was
opened in 2013 that includes among others the Helgo -
land lobster.
In the past, more than 250 large deep-water sailing ships
were built at Bremerhaven’s shipyards, including for
ex ample the “Krusenstern” or the “Alexander von Humboldt
II”. They and many other international tall ships meet
every five years for the Sail Bremerhaven, with the next
one in August 2015. The event always attracts around one
million visitors. One of the best views of the large tall ships
parade can be had from the Atlantic Hotel Sail City. Measuring
more than 140 metres (from the ground to the top),
this is the tallest building in the city; in the hotel rooms on
floors one to eight, visitors unpack their bags and enjoy
the wonderful view of the Weser estuary.
Tourism has become an important pillar for Bremerhaven’s
economy. The total gross turnover generated by tourisminduced
income amounted to around 104 million Euro in
2011. This included more than 68 million Euro from over -
night stays, while day guests generated around 35.5 million
Euro in turnover. Altogether 1.6 million visitors were
counted, with around 25 percent staying overnight and
75 percent visiting the city as day guests.
Bremen: always worth a city trip
Day guests to Bremerhaven sometimes stay the night in
Bremen. Around 60 kilometres up the river, Bremen is also
a very popular tourist destination in Northwest Germany.
The number of overnight stays here increased from 1.1
million 2000 to 1.6 million in 2012; there will be another
increase expected for 2013.
