Abstract<br />

Fragstellung: To examine the safety and accessibility of the sternoclavicular joint by arthroscopy for<br />

debridement of the joint in a cadaveric model.<br />

Methodik: An inferolateral and superomedial portal was created for debridement of the sternoclavicular joints in<br />

12 cadaveric specimens. After debridement, the specimens were dissected with needles positioned in the portal<br />

tracts. The distance between the needles and bony landmarks, tendons and ligaments was measured. The<br />

integrity of the posterior capsule and the extent of resection of the intra-articular disc were evaluated<br />

macroscopically.<br />

Ergebnis: Both port<strong>als</strong> were found to be safe while allowing good access to the joint. The superomedial portal<br />

went through the tendon of the sternal part of the sternocleidomastoideus muscle and the inferolateral portal<br />

through the pectoralis major muscle. The port<strong>als</strong> entered the capsule respectively medial and lateral to the<br />

anterior sternoclavicular ligament. The posterior capsule was never perforated. Macroscopic evaluation showed a<br />

stable rim of the intra-articular disc after debridement.<br />

Schlussfolgerung: In this cadaver study, arthroscopy of the sternoclavicular joint is shown to be a minimally<br />

invasive procedure allowing debridement of the intra-articular disc without damaging the ligamentous structures of<br />

the joint.<br />
