Abstract
Fragstellung: The KineSpring® System is an implantable load absorber designed to treat pain secondary to
medial knee OA. Following the OASYS feasibility study, the post-market COAST trial enrolled patients at 5
centers. This paper evaluates patient characteristics of the two studies and proposes refined patient indications
based on the results.
Methodik: Seventy patients with moderate to severe medial knee OA were enrolled (OASYS:30, COAST:40).
Inclusion criteria were nearly identical across the studies. Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) radiographic scores were used
to classify medial compartment disease severity.
OASYS patients were slightly younger (49 vs. 54 years), slightly heavier (90 vs. 87 kg), and had slightly higher
BMI (30 vs. 29 kg/m2). Patients in OASYS were primarily mild to moderately diseased: 7 patients were K-L 1 or 2,
19 patients were K-L 3, and 4 patients were K-L 4. COAST patients were distinctly more diseased: 5 patients were
K-L 1 or 2, 18 patients were K-L 3, and 12 patients were K-L 4 (5 patients did not have K-L scores reported).
OASYS patients had a mean follow-up duration of 29 months compared with 12 months for COAST.
Ergebnis: The mean procedure time was 13 minutes shorter in COAST (61±13 vs. 74±12 min, p
