school with a long tradition, dominant position within Slovenia and international recognition. The
Faculty <strong>of</strong> Management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Primorska on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand is a young school without
tradition, but aiming to secure its recognition both domestically and internationally.
A bibliometric method was used to measure research productivity. As in many prior studies (Abramo
et al., 2008; Van Raan, 2005), it has been operationalized by measuring articles published in <strong>the</strong>
period 2000 –2009 in journals included in <strong>the</strong> SCI/SSCI database. Articles published in journals
included in <strong>the</strong> SCI/SSCI database are available in <strong>the</strong> ISI Web <strong>of</strong> Knowledge database, which is
owned by ThomsonReuters and from which also <strong>the</strong> SICRIS database (Slovenian Current Research
Information System) obtains data. In this study a two-phase approach was applied for data capture.
First, at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> 2010 we identified all researchers employed at <strong>the</strong> business schools in
question. This was done on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> publicly available data on <strong>the</strong> websites <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual
faculties about <strong>the</strong> teachers employed <strong>the</strong>reby. The data on <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> employees are presented
in Table 1. The second step involved looking up each individual researcher in <strong>the</strong> Web <strong>of</strong> Knowledge
database and, in order to confirm <strong>the</strong> data, also in <strong>the</strong> SICRIS database. From <strong>the</strong> databases a list
was compiled <strong>of</strong> all articles that individual researchers published in <strong>the</strong> examined period 2000 –2009
in journals included in <strong>the</strong> SCI/SSCI database; with regard to such, <strong>the</strong> following characteristics were
extracted: <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> article, <strong>the</strong> year <strong>of</strong> publication, <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> journal in which <strong>the</strong> article
was published, and <strong>the</strong> authors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> article.

A methodological limitation regarding <strong>the</strong> approach applied has to be taken into account: since <strong>the</strong>
number <strong>of</strong> employees at all <strong>the</strong> faculties changes from year to year, we did not include in <strong>the</strong> analysis
<strong>the</strong> published articles <strong>of</strong> those researchers who were no longer employed at <strong>the</strong> business schools
examined when <strong>the</strong> researchers employed <strong>the</strong>reby were identified, even if in <strong>the</strong> past <strong>the</strong>y had
published in journals included in <strong>the</strong> SCI/SSCI database. However, <strong>the</strong> analysis does include <strong>the</strong>
published articles <strong>of</strong> researchers who had been employed at a different institution during some <strong>of</strong> this
period. Despite this limitation regarding <strong>the</strong> methodology, <strong>the</strong> approach described provides a credible
summary <strong>of</strong> knowledge production in Slovenia and at individual faculties for several reasons: firstly,
<strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> researchers leaving <strong>the</strong> population examined resulted from retirements, with regard to
which older researchers in general do not publish much in <strong>the</strong> journals included in <strong>the</strong> SCI/SSCI
database; secondly, <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> researchers entering into this population resulted from <strong>the</strong>
employment <strong>of</strong> young teaching assistants, who in general do not publish much in journals included in
<strong>the</strong> SCI/SSCI database; thirdly, in Slovenia, those employed in academia are not very mobile since
<strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> teachers in higher education remain employed for <strong>the</strong>ir entire career at <strong>the</strong> same
institution; fourthly, a similar approach is used in o<strong>the</strong>r countries as well (see Reidpath and Allotey,
2010).
Organizational strategy was deduced from <strong>the</strong> published statements.

recognisable impact on economic success as well as on <strong>the</strong> wider socio-economic environment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>
Central and South-Eastern Europe, and <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean.

and most prominent international centre for students, teaching staff, researchers and <strong>the</strong> business
