The next category relates to <strong>the</strong> knowledge found in dependencies / relationships. In this category
techniques are used to obtain relationships between domain entities. Techniques in this category are
used to elicit semantic knowledge. Table 4.10 contains a list <strong>of</strong> examples <strong>of</strong> techniques used in this
categorisation <strong>of</strong> KE techniques.

The final set <strong>of</strong> KE techniques are used to evaluate systems, usually prototype systems, or o<strong>the</strong>r
types <strong>of</strong> KE session results. The final set deal with qualitative metrics. Table 4.11 contains a list <strong>of</strong>
examples <strong>of</strong> techniques used in this categorisation <strong>of</strong> KE techniques.

3. Conclusions
Although not always evident in existing literature, <strong>the</strong> review serves as a means to illustrate <strong>the</strong>
relationship between KA and KE. Section 3 provided an overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> different types <strong>of</strong> KA
techniques and identified <strong>the</strong> subset to which KE was classified as being part <strong>of</strong> i.e. <strong>the</strong> acquisition <strong>of</strong>
knowledge from human sources. Whilst <strong>the</strong> issues faced by KA (identified in section 2) are inherent in
KE, KE has its own set <strong>of</strong> KE specific issues as illustrated in section 4.1. These issues must be
addressed in order to minimise <strong>the</strong> risks involved in <strong>the</strong> KE (Outlined in section 4.2). Finally in <strong>the</strong> KE
techniques, section 4.3 examined <strong>the</strong> various categorisations <strong>of</strong> KE techniques. No single technique
can be used to fully elicit knowledge in its entirety. Understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> categorisations and <strong>the</strong>
different types <strong>of</strong> techniques available are <strong>of</strong> great importance in aiding <strong>the</strong> selecting process and
ensuring that appropriate techniques are selected relative to <strong>the</strong> goals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> KE activity. .
