the children <strong>of</strong> men all the wicked smitings <strong>of</strong> spirits and<br />

demons, and the smitings <strong>of</strong> the embryo and the babe, that it<br />

may pass away, and the smitings <strong>of</strong> the soul, the bites <strong>of</strong> the<br />

serpent, and the smitings which befall at noon, the son <strong>of</strong> the<br />

serpent named Taba't. 13. And this is the number <strong>of</strong><br />

Kesbeel, who showed the head <strong>of</strong> the oath to the holy ones<br />

when he dwelt high above in glory, and its name is Beqa.<br />

14. And this (angel) requested Michael to show him the<br />

hidden name, that they might mention it in the oath, so that<br />

those who revealed all that was hidden to the children <strong>of</strong><br />

men might quake before that name and oath. 15. And<br />

this is the power <strong>of</strong> that oath, for it is powerful and strong,<br />

and he placed this oath Akae in the hand <strong>of</strong> Michael. 1 6.<br />

And these are the secrets <strong>of</strong> this oath, and the heaven was<br />

made strong through the oath, and was suspended before<br />

the world was created and for ever : 17. And through it<br />

the earth was founded upon the water, and <strong>from</strong> the secret<br />

recesses <strong>of</strong> the mountains come beautiful waters <strong>from</strong> the<br />

creation <strong>of</strong> the world unto eternity. 18. And through that<br />

and this I have followed. 13. <strong>The</strong> number <strong>of</strong> Kesbeel. Hallevi<br />

(Journ. Asiat. p. 383; 1867) suggests that for *}*A4 M * there stood<br />

iTppB which means either ' number ' or • charge.' Hence, ' this<br />

is the charge <strong>of</strong> Kesbeel,' i. e. to remind the other angels <strong>of</strong> the<br />

oath by which they were bound. 14. Show him the hidden<br />

name. So G M. Other MSS. give ' show them the hidden name.'<br />

After these words Din. and all MSS. but G M insert ' that thus<br />

they might see that hidden name and/ I have followed G. M has a<br />

clause peculiar to itself. 16. Was made strong. So G 0J«0. Din.<br />

reads RlO* ' they were strong . . . and the heaven was suspended.'<br />

17. Beautiful waters. SoAEFGHIN and practically M. Din.<br />

which according to ancient Jewish Heaven was suspended : cf. Job<br />

interpretation treated <strong>of</strong> demonic dan- xxvi. 7 for a similar expi'ession regardgers.<br />

<strong>The</strong> serpent named Tab&'t. ing the earth. 17. Earth was<br />
