seem as though they had withered and shed all their leaves,<br />

except fourteen trees, which do not lose their foliage but retain<br />

the old foliage <strong>from</strong> two to three years till the new comes.<br />

IV. And again I observed the days <strong>of</strong> summer how the<br />

sun is above the earth over against it. And you seek shade<br />

and shelter against the heat <strong>of</strong> the sun, and the earth also<br />

burns with glowing heat, and so you cannot tread on the<br />

earth, or on a rock by reason <strong>of</strong> its heat.<br />

V. i. I observed how the trees cover themselves with<br />

green leaves and bear fruit : wherefore give ye heed to every-<br />

thing, and recognise how He who liveth for ever hath made<br />

all this for you. 2. How His works are before Him in<br />

each succeeding year, and all His works serve Him and alter<br />

not but everything is done as God hath ordained. 3. And<br />

behold how the seas and the rivers together accomplish their<br />

task. 4. But as for you, ye have not continued steadfast,<br />

and the law <strong>of</strong> the Lord have ye not fulfilled but have<br />

transgressed it, and have slanderously spoken proud and<br />

hard words with your impure mouths against His greatness<br />

O ye hard hearted ye will find no peace. 5. And therefore<br />

will ye execrate your days and be bereft <strong>of</strong> the years <strong>of</strong><br />

your life: but the years <strong>of</strong> your destruction will be mul-<br />
