and godless, x. 12; xvi. 1, and all classes <strong>of</strong> Israel, with one excep-<br />

tion, receive their final award, i. 9. To make this possible, this<br />

judgment is preceded by a General Resurrection <strong>of</strong> Israel, xxii.<br />

A final end is now made <strong>of</strong> sin on the earth, and the earth cleansed,<br />

x. 15, 16, 20-22 ; the wicked are cast into Gehenna, and their<br />

punishment is a spectacle for the righteous to behold, xxvii. 2 ; the<br />

Messianic kingdom is established, with Jerusalem and Palestine as<br />

its centre, xxv. 5—there is no Messiah, and God abides with men,<br />

xxv. 3 ; all the Gentiles will become righteous and worship God,<br />

x. 2 1 ;<br />

the righteous are allowed to eat <strong>of</strong> the tree <strong>of</strong> life, xxv. 4-6,<br />

and thereby enjoy patriarchal lives, v. 9 ; xxv. 6, begetting 1000<br />

children, x. 17, and enjoying unlimited material blessings, v. 7,<br />

x. 18, 19; xi. 2.<br />

As to what becomes <strong>of</strong> the righteous, after the second death,<br />

there is no hint in this fragmentary Section. <strong>The</strong>re is much<br />

celestial, terrestrial, and subterrestrial geography in xvii-xix, xxi-<br />

xxxvi.<br />

TRANSLATION.<br />

I. I. <strong>The</strong> words <strong>of</strong> the blessing <strong>of</strong> <strong>Enoch</strong>, wherewith he<br />

blessed the elect and righteous, who will beJiving in the day<br />

<strong>of</strong> tribulation, when all the wicked and godless are to be<br />

removed. 2. And <strong>Enoch</strong> answered and spake— (<strong>Enoch</strong>) a<br />

righteous man, whose eyes were opened by God, that he might<br />

see a vision <strong>of</strong> the Holy One in the heavens, which the angels<br />

showed me, and <strong>from</strong> them I heard everything and I under-<br />

stood what I saw, but not for this generation, but for the<br />

remote generations which are for to come. 3. Concerning<br />

I. 2. God. I have rendered hVYUMrtyC by 'God,' and &7R&<br />

by ' Lord.' <strong>The</strong> former word is at times a rendering <strong>of</strong> 6 Kvpws,<br />

and at times <strong>of</strong> 6 6e6s in the LXX. It occurs ten times in <strong>Enoch</strong>.<br />

h7°^\\l=6 6e6s is found nine times. Vision <strong>of</strong> the Holy One.<br />

I. 1. <strong>The</strong> elect and righteous. similar designations <strong>of</strong> God see v. 3.<br />

This designation is found also in <strong>The</strong> change <strong>from</strong> the third to the first<br />

xxxviii. 2, 3, 4; xxxix. 6, 7 ; xlviii. 1 ; person in this verse, is <strong>of</strong> frequent<br />

lviii. 1, 2 ; lxi. 13 ; lxii. 1 2, 13, 15 ; lxx. occurrence in this <strong>book</strong> : cf. xii. 1-3 ;<br />

3. 2. <strong>The</strong> Holy One. For this and xxxvii. 1, 2 ; lxx. 1-3; lxxi. 5 ; xcii. 1.
