and have done as the children <strong>of</strong> men do, and have taken<br />

unto themselves wives, and have grossly defiled themselves<br />

on the earth. 5. <strong>The</strong>y will have no peace on the earth<br />

nor forgiveness <strong>of</strong> sin : and inasmuch as they delight them-<br />

selves in their children, 6. the murder <strong>of</strong> their beloved<br />

ones they shall see, and over the destruction <strong>of</strong> their children<br />

will they lament, and will make supplication unto eternity,<br />

but mercy and peace will they not attain/<br />

XIII. 1 . And<br />

find no peace :<br />

<strong>Enoch</strong> went and said :<br />

' Azazel : thou shalt<br />

a severe sentence has gone forth against thee<br />

—(Rufael) shall put thee in bonds : 2. And alleviation,<br />

intercession, and mercy will not be accorded to thee, because<br />

<strong>of</strong> the oppression which thou hast taught, and because <strong>of</strong> all<br />

the works <strong>of</strong> blasphemy, oppression, and sin which thou hast<br />

shown to the children <strong>of</strong> men.' 3. <strong>The</strong>n proceeding farther,<br />

I spoke to them all together and they were all afraid and<br />

were seized with fear and trembling. 4. And they besought<br />

me to draw up a petition for them that they might find<br />

forgiveness, and to take their petition into the presence <strong>of</strong><br />

God in heaven. 5. For <strong>from</strong> thenceforward they could not<br />

speak (with Him) nor lift up their eyes to heaven for shame<br />

<strong>of</strong> their sins for which they were punished. 6. <strong>The</strong>n I<br />

composed their petition and the prayer on behalf <strong>of</strong> their spirit,<br />

and for their individual deeds for which they besought for-<br />

giveness and forbearance. 7. And I went <strong>of</strong>f and sat down<br />

at the waters <strong>of</strong> Dan, in Dan, to the right (i. e. the south)<br />
