living. 4. And your spirits—<br />

(the spirits) <strong>of</strong> you who die in<br />

righteousness, will live and rejoice and be glad, and their<br />

spirits will not perish, but their memorial will be before the<br />

face <strong>of</strong> the Great One unto all the generations <strong>of</strong> the world :<br />

wherefore then fear not their contumely. 5. Woe to you,<br />

ye sinners, when ye die in your sins, and those who are like<br />

you say regarding you :<br />

' Blessed are they, the sinners : they<br />

have seen all their days. 6. And now they have died in<br />

prosperity and in riches, and have not seen tribulation or<br />

murder in their life ; and they have died in honour, and judg-<br />

ment has not been executed on them during their life/ 7.<br />

Know ye that their souls will be made to descend into Sheol,<br />

and they will become wretched and great will be their tribu-<br />

lation. 8. And into darkness and chains (lit. net ') and a<br />

burning fire, where there is grievous condemnation, will your<br />

spirits enter ; and there will be grievous condemnation for the<br />

generations <strong>of</strong> the world. Woe to you, for ye will have no<br />

ners. G G 1 M curiously read ' ye dead sinners/ Die in your sins.<br />

G G 1 M read : (HlOA: "pflUfttiao* ' die in the riches <strong>of</strong> your sins.'<br />

Seen all their days. G adds ip£? seen good all their days/<br />

8. Where there is grievous condemnation. Din. renders 'beim<br />

grossen Gericht/ Generations <strong>of</strong> the world. So G G 1 M :<br />

•tah&£i Ite". Other MSS. 'all generations unto eternity/<br />

either. <strong>The</strong>re is apparently only a sure doom awaits them in Sheol<br />

resurrection <strong>of</strong> the spirit. 5-8. darkness and chains and a burning<br />

A different fate awaits the wicked. flame. 7. Sheol: see lxiii. 10<br />

<strong>The</strong>se have enjoyed all the blessings (note). Sheol here is the final place<br />

which according to the O. T. belonged <strong>of</strong> punishment : cf. the different signi-<br />

to the righteous. Hence they vaunt fications it has in cii. 5, 11. 8. See<br />

themselves on their prosperity and Crit. Note. Have no peace: see<br />

immunity <strong>from</strong> punishment; but a v. 4 (note); xciv. 6 (note). 9-
