As yv6*! 1(1 but that I have read h%S&. for ZRSGl 1(1.<br />

For ras 6rjKas and ras ao-TpaTras read with Eth. al OrJKai and ai<br />

do-TpairaL Hence, for ' at the ends . . . fiery bow ' read in the<br />

uttermost depths where were the fiery bow' &c. After avrwv Eth.<br />

adds Kal fxdxaipav nvpos. 4. After &vtwv Eth. adds a gloss<br />

H&tfilC 'so-called/ irape X ov. This is right. See p. 363 (notes).<br />

Eth. as napadex<strong>of</strong>xepov is wrong. 5. Bvo-eoos. Eth. = 7Tpos tt)v<br />

8vo-tv. 6. Before 'Ibov Eth. adds 'and/ Before tovs Eth. adds<br />

' all/ Kal pexpi tov peyaXov TroTafxov = the Styx. Eth. omits.<br />

Unless we are here dealing with a description <strong>of</strong> Hades, this<br />

clause is an interpolation. But as the whole context points<br />

to Hades, the words seem original, and for the same reason we<br />

must strike out ov after o-dpg with Eth. 7. Before tdov Eth.<br />

adds * and/ I have emended tovs avepovs into ra 6pr) } as these words<br />

seem corrupt, and are without the support <strong>of</strong> the context or any<br />

parallel : cf. lxxvii. 4, where the mountains <strong>of</strong> the hoar frost are<br />

mentioned. Possibly there is also an allusion to Jer. xiii. 16
