LXXXY. 1. And after this I saw another dream, and I will<br />

show all the vision to thee, my son/ 3. And <strong>Enoch</strong> lifted<br />

up his voice and spake unto his son Methuselah : ' To thee,<br />

my son, will I speak: hear my words— incline thine ear to<br />

the dream-vision <strong>of</strong> thy father. 3. Before I took thy<br />

mother Edna, I saw in a vision <strong>of</strong> my bed, and behold a bull<br />

came forth <strong>from</strong> the earth, and that bull was white; and<br />

after it came forth a heifer, and along with this (latter) came<br />

forth two young bulls, one <strong>of</strong> them black and the other red.<br />

favourite one : cf. lxii. 8 ; xciii. 2, 5,<br />

LXXXV-XC. <strong>The</strong> second Dream-<br />

vision. In this second vision the<br />

writer gives a complete history <strong>of</strong><br />

the world <strong>from</strong> Adam down to the<br />

final judgment and the establishment<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Messianic kingdom. After the<br />

example <strong>of</strong> Daniel men are symbolized<br />

by animals. <strong>The</strong> leaders <strong>of</strong> the chosen<br />

race are represented by domestic<br />

animals, the patriarchs by bulls, and<br />

the faithful <strong>of</strong> later times by sheep.<br />

This difference is intended to mark<br />

the later declension <strong>of</strong> Israel in faith<br />

and righteousness. <strong>The</strong> Gentiles are<br />

symbolized by wild beasts and birds<br />

<strong>of</strong> prey ; the fallen watchers by stars ;<br />

unfallen angels by men. At times<br />

the author is obliged to abandon his<br />

symbolism, and he is not always con-<br />

sistent in his use <strong>of</strong> it, as the same<br />

symbol varies in meaning. Even the<br />

divine name is adapted to the pre-<br />

vailing symbolism. In the main the<br />

narrative is based on the O.T., but<br />

at times mythical elements <strong>from</strong> later<br />

Jewish exegesis are incorporated.<br />

Edna: cf. Ixxxiii. 2. Bull. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>Ethiopic</strong> word is lahm. This word<br />

has various meanings in the following<br />

chapters. In the sing, it = bull or-<br />

heifer; in the plur. it = bulls, or<br />

cattle, or cows. <strong>The</strong> context must<br />

determine the sense. <strong>The</strong> author uses<br />

also the unequivocal word sor, which<br />

always means a bull. Ta'wa = vitulus<br />

or vitula in these chapters. Eve is so<br />

designated in this verse, i. e. a heifer,<br />

to denote her as a virgin. In ver. 6<br />

she is called ' a cow.' White is the<br />

colour that symbolizes righteousness<br />

throughout this vision : cf. lxxxv. 8 ;<br />

lxxxvii, 2, &c. Cf. Is. i. 18 ; Ps. li. 7 ;<br />
