Glossary Glossary of Terms<br />

CompuColor A method of assigning colors to scanned images of samples.<br />

context-sensitive Information located on the computer to help a user while in a program. It provides<br />

information when and where the user wants it.<br />

contouring The event detection process in the <strong>iCys</strong> which results in a two-dimensional outline<br />

of the cell. There are separate contours for threshold, integral, background, or<br />

peripheral.<br />

histogram<br />

Plots the values of two user-selected features such that the frequency of<br />

occurrence is displayed as a 3D bar graph with color defining frequency.<br />

control A standard against which observations or conclusions of other samples may be<br />

checked for their validity.<br />

CV See coefficient of variation<br />

data file A file with an .EVT or .RAW extension that was saved to disk which has<br />

measured values from a sample.<br />

desktop A window in which all the menus and tools to operate a specific application are<br />

located.<br />

dichroic mirror An optical element which selectively reflects one bandpass in the optical spectrum<br />

while simultaneously transmitting a second bandpass. A dichroic mirror is usually<br />

positioned so that the incident beam is 45o to the mirror surface, the reflected light<br />

thus being 90o to the incident beam.<br />

dimmed An unavailable menu item or option. It is unavailable to the user because it is<br />

inappropriate or not selected at that time.<br />

diploid Cells in the initial cell cycle stage that have two sets of chromosomes.<br />

directory A file containing the names and locations of all the files contained on a storage<br />

medium.<br />

double-click A user action which quickly presses and releases the left mouse button twice to<br />

select an action based on the cursor location.<br />

drag-and-drop A method of moving or copying text, graphics, or other items from one window to<br />

another.<br />

drop-down arrow An arrow on a dialog box that points down indicating that when pressed more<br />

options will be displayed.<br />

E<br />

ellipsis points Ellipsis points appended to a menu item indicate that when selected a dialog box<br />

will be displayed with more options.<br />

event A particle, cell, or aggregate that has features that can be measured by a<br />

cytometer.<br />
