RELATED OPERATIONAL OBJECTIVE: By June <strong>2008</strong>, there will be a measurable increase in professional development activities<br />
in the area of cultural competence available to agency staff. Workshops will include professional development in adult to adult<br />
interactions, adult to student interactions (including instruction) and student to student interactions.<br />
DESCRIPTIVE NARRATIVE: The Department of Educational Support Services will collaborate with Human Resources, <strong>Plan</strong>ning and<br />
Program Improvement and agency stakeholders to identify, implement and evaluate professional development programs focused on<br />
increasing and reinforcing cultural competence. Cultural Competence is defined* as interacting with other cultural groups using the<br />
five essential elements of cultural proficiency as the standard for individual behavior and school (workplace) practices:<br />
• Assess culture<br />
• Value diversity<br />
• Manage the dynamics of diversity<br />
• Adapt to diversity<br />
• Institutionalize cultural knowledge<br />

ACTIVITIES<br />
1. Identify <strong>Eastern</strong> <strong>Suffolk</strong> <strong>BOCES</strong> staff to form a<br />
Steering Committee to provide input on agency-wide<br />
training.<br />
2. Meet with the Steering Committee to review<br />
action plans and to identify training clusters and<br />
stakeholder groups for each cluster.<br />
