DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK<br />

The Social Work curriculum involves two components,<br />

pre-social work and social work. Pre-social work includes<br />

approxim<strong>at</strong>ely one academic year in an accredited college<br />

or university. As pre-social work majors, students must<br />

successfully complete the following courses: English<br />

Composition (6 hours), Sociology 1001 or Psychology<br />

2001 (3 hours), M<strong>at</strong>h 1011 (3 hours), and Social Work<br />

1001, 1002, can apply while enrolled in SOCW 2005. The<br />

Social Work major consists <strong>of</strong> approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 4 academic<br />

semesters after admission to the Social Work Program.<br />

It is concerned with courses providing a broad liberal<br />

arts base and with social work courses emphasizing the<br />

knowledge, values, and skills needed to prepare students<br />

for beginning generalist social work practice.<br />

ADMISSION TO THE SOCIAL WORK MAJOR<br />

The Social Work major <strong>of</strong>fers a liberal arts base,<br />

including sociology, psychology, biology, and required<br />

social work courses in the area <strong>of</strong> human behavior and<br />

the social environment, social welfare policy and services,<br />

social research, social work practice, and field practicum.
