individual; emphasis upon the development <strong>of</strong> various forms <strong>of</strong><br />

2001. AMERICAN NATIONAL GOVERNMENT. 3 cr. Consider<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the n<strong>at</strong>ure <strong>of</strong> democracy, civil rights, federalism, the political<br />
process, the legisl<strong>at</strong>ive, executive, and judicial branches, and<br />
current problems.<br />
2002. STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT. 3 cr. An intensive study<br />
<strong>of</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e and local government, structural components, political<br />
process, and basic problems. Special emphasis on <strong>Louisiana</strong><br />

3001. RESEARCH METHODS. 3 cr. This course is designed to<br />
introduce political science majors to the scope and research<br />
methods <strong>of</strong> the discipline. Prerequisite: POLS 2001 or approval <strong>of</strong><br />
instructor and department head.<br />
4003. ETHICS. 3 cr. A study <strong>of</strong> the theoretical found<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> morality<br />
with reference to approaches to ethical thought, character,<br />
and action. Concepts include good and evil, right and wrong,<br />
oblig<strong>at</strong>ion and rights, responsibility and freedom. The applic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>of</strong> these concepts to the working out <strong>of</strong> particular ethical<br />
problems. (Same as PHIL 4003.)<br />
4004. GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL POLITICS. 3 cr. Global<br />
Environmental Politics analyzes transn<strong>at</strong>ional environmental<br />
issues, such as clim<strong>at</strong>e change, species and habit<strong>at</strong> loss, w<strong>at</strong>er<br />
and air pollution, and waste management, from a cross-cultural,<br />
multi-disciplined approach with an emphasis on policy development<br />
and implement<strong>at</strong>ion issues. Prerequisite: POLS 2001.<br />
4007. WESTERN POLITICAL THEORY. 3 cr. A study <strong>of</strong> political theory<br />
beginning with Pl<strong>at</strong>o and the ancient Greeks and continuing<br />
through the Middle Ages, Reform<strong>at</strong>ion, and Enlightenment to<br />
Marx, Mills and the modern age. The central questions <strong>of</strong> political<br />
thought are explored e.g., wh<strong>at</strong> is the good?; wh<strong>at</strong> is justice?; how<br />
is political authority acquired?; where does sovereignty reside?;<br />
and how do we incur oblig<strong>at</strong>ions? Prerequisite: POLS 2001.<br />
4021. AMERICAN POLITICAL THEORY. 3 cr. This course focuses on<br />
the origin and development <strong>of</strong> American political thought. Topics<br />
include Locke and liberalism, Puritanism and republicanism,<br />
Paine and the revolutionary impulse, Founders and Anti-<br />
Federalists, Jefferson’s agricultural republic, Tocqueville’s social<br />
America, Jacksonian democracy, Lincoln and Calhoun, populists,<br />
progressives and pragm<strong>at</strong>ists, New Dealers and social engineers.<br />

4023. AMERICAN URBAN POLITICS. 3 cr. An analysis <strong>of</strong> the<br />
structure and functions <strong>of</strong> contemporary city governments with<br />
considerable <strong>at</strong>tention devoted to basic problems. Special<br />
emphasis on local government in <strong>Louisiana</strong>.<br />
4029. WOMEN AND POLITICS. 3 cr. An examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the role th<strong>at</strong><br />
women have played in the development <strong>of</strong> the U.S. political<br />
system, including historical analysis <strong>of</strong> the barriers to women’s<br />
particip<strong>at</strong>ion and the impact <strong>of</strong> politically active women on<br />
contemporary issues.<br />
4044. MIDDLE EAST POLITICS. 3 cr. A course th<strong>at</strong> analyzes Middle<br />
East politics beginning with World War I to the present. Major<br />
issues include the Arab-Israeli Conflict, w<strong>at</strong>er policy, oil politics,<br />
Arab N<strong>at</strong>ionalism, Zionism. N<strong>at</strong>ionalities and sub-n<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
movements in the regions <strong>of</strong> Turkey, the Near Middle East, North<br />
Africa and the Persian Gulf will serve as illustr<strong>at</strong>ive m<strong>at</strong>erial.<br />
Issues such as moderniz<strong>at</strong>ion, democr<strong>at</strong>iz<strong>at</strong>ion, multil<strong>at</strong>eralism,<br />
liberaliz<strong>at</strong>ion, terrorism, free-trade and women’s rights will be<br />
considered. Prerequisite: POLS 2001.<br />
4057. CONTEMPORARY POLITICAL THOUGHT. 3 cr. Political thought<br />
<strong>of</strong> the twentieth century; liberalism, modern totalitarianism,<br />
conserv<strong>at</strong>ism, Freudianism, existentialism, and democracy.<br />
4063. COMPARATIVE POLITICS OF RACE AND ETHNICITY. 3 cr.<br />
Intern<strong>at</strong>ional compar<strong>at</strong>ive analysis <strong>of</strong> how political processes<br />
both shape and are shaped by racial and ethnic differences, both<br />
within and among n<strong>at</strong>ion-st<strong>at</strong>es. Prerequisite: POLS 2001.<br />
4064. INTERNSHIP IN POLITICAL SCIENCES. 3 cr. May be repe<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
