1001. INTRODUCTION TO DENTAL HYGIENE. 1 cr. An introduction<br />

to Dental Hygiene including an overview <strong>of</strong> the normal oral cavity,<br />

common p<strong>at</strong>hological conditions, preventive measures, dental<br />

hygiene educ<strong>at</strong>ion, and community dentistry. F,Sp<br />

3018. ORAL HISTOLOGY AND EMBRYOLOGY. 1 cr. Microscopic<br />

studies with emphasis on development <strong>of</strong> the tissues and<br />

structures <strong>of</strong> the head, neck and oral cavity. Prerequisites: credit<br />

or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 3019; Dental Hygiene 3020, 3021, 3022, 3023 or<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> department head.<br />

3019. ORAL HISTOLOGY AND EMBRYOLOGY LAB. 1 cr. A<br />

labor<strong>at</strong>ory course to accompany 3018. Two hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory.<br />

Prerequisite: credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 3018 or permission <strong>of</strong><br />

3020. CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE ORIENTATION. 2 cr. An<br />

orient<strong>at</strong>ion course designed to provide dental hygiene students<br />

with basic didactic background required for entry into the first<br />

clinical level <strong>of</strong> basic p<strong>at</strong>ient care. Prerequisite: registr<strong>at</strong>ion in<br />

3021. CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE TECHNIQUE. 2 cr. An<br />

introduction to basic clinical techniques required for entry into the<br />

first clinical level <strong>of</strong> basic p<strong>at</strong>ient care. Designed to accompany<br />

3020. Prerequisite: registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 3020. F<br />

3022. DENTAL ANATOMY. 3 cr. The study <strong>of</strong> the an<strong>at</strong>omical,<br />

morphological and physiological characteristics <strong>of</strong> the human<br />

dentition. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory component includes the identific<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />

differenti<strong>at</strong>ion between various an<strong>at</strong>omical landmarks <strong>of</strong> the teeth. F<br />

3023. HEAD AND NECK ANATOMY. 3 cr. Designed to give the<br />

students a basic knowledge and understanding <strong>of</strong> head and<br />

neck an<strong>at</strong>omy. This includes terminology, osteology, and basic<br />

physiology, with special emphasis on the oral cavity. F<br />

3024. GENERAL AND ORAL PATHOLOGY. 3 cr. This course is<br />

designed to introduce the student to current concepts rel<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

to the p<strong>at</strong>hophysiologic mechanisms <strong>of</strong> human disease. The<br />

student is expected to acquire a fundamental knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

diagnostic principles regarding systemic disease in general and<br />

oral diseases in particular, as well as conceptual knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

tre<strong>at</strong>ment and prognostic principles. Prerequisites: 3020, 3021,<br />

3022, 3023; registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 3025, 3026. Sp<br />

3025. CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE. 2 cr. A continu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> 3021.<br />

Concentr<strong>at</strong>ion on the assessment, tre<strong>at</strong>ment and evalu<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>of</strong> p<strong>at</strong>ients demonstr<strong>at</strong>ing dental health to minimal disease.<br />

Implement<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> preventive procedures to maintain dental<br />

health. Prerequisites: 3018-3019, 3020, 3021, 3022, 3023;<br />

3026. CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE LECTURE. 3 cr. A didactic course<br />

to accompany 3025 presenting inform<strong>at</strong>ion and techniques<br />

pertinent to the tre<strong>at</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> clinic p<strong>at</strong>ients. Concentr<strong>at</strong>ion on<br />

dental health educ<strong>at</strong>ion, prevention <strong>of</strong> disease, evalu<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

and classific<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> oral conditions and introduction to dental<br />

emergencies. Prerequisite: registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 3025. Sp<br />

3027. ORAL RADIOLOGY. 2 cr. The study <strong>of</strong> the principles and<br />

theories <strong>of</strong> the x-ray machine. The technique <strong>of</strong> taking,<br />

processing and mounting dental x-ray film. Examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

teeth and surrounding tissue through evalu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> x-ray and<br />

diagnostic models. Prerequisites: 3020, 3021, 3022, 3023;<br />

4014. PERIODONTOLOGY. 3 cr. The study <strong>of</strong> normal and abnormal<br />

periodontium, the etiology <strong>of</strong> periodontal disease including systemic<br />

factors, immune response and p<strong>at</strong>hogenesis <strong>of</strong> plaque rel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

factors. Diagnosis, prognosis, and tre<strong>at</strong>ment planning are applied<br />

to the various classific<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> periodontal diseases. Prerequisites:<br />

DHYG 4015, 4016, 4017; registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4021, 4022. F<br />

4015. DENTAL MATERIALS AND DENTAL ASSISTING. 2 cr. This<br />

course will introduce the student to m<strong>at</strong>erials used in dentistry<br />

and their applic<strong>at</strong>ion. Students will apply this knowledge in the<br />

labor<strong>at</strong>ory where they will demonstr<strong>at</strong>e specific labor<strong>at</strong>ory and<br />

clinical procedures. Dental Assisting and labor<strong>at</strong>ory functions<br />

will be demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed. Prerequisites: Completion <strong>of</strong> all 3000 level<br />

Dental Hygiene courses; registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4016, 4017. Su<br />

4016. CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE. 1 cr. A continu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> 3025.<br />

Applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> didactic and clinical techniques to p<strong>at</strong>ient<br />

experiences involving healthy p<strong>at</strong>ients or those with minimal<br />

disease. Prerequisite: registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4017. Su<br />

4017. CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE LECTURE. 1 cr. A lecture to<br />

accompany Dental Hygiene 4016 and a continu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Dental<br />

Hygiene 3026. Emphasis will be placed on the evalu<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />

conditions, dental restor<strong>at</strong>ions as they rel<strong>at</strong>e to these conditions<br />

and occlusion. Prerequisite: registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4016. Su<br />

4018. DENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION. 2 cr. Principles <strong>of</strong> dental health in<br />

individual and group situ<strong>at</strong>ions. Understanding the use <strong>of</strong> teaching<br />

methods, m<strong>at</strong>erials, and visual aids for individuals <strong>of</strong> al ages.<br />

Prerequisites: 4014, 4015, 4016, 4017; registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4021, 4022.<br />

4019. COMMUNITY AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY. 2 cr. The<br />

analysis, prevention and control <strong>of</strong> dental disease using a<br />

community approach. Includes inform<strong>at</strong>ion and skills necessary<br />

to assess community needs. Prerequisites: 4014, 4015, 4016,<br />

4017; registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4021, 4022. F<br />

4020. COMMUNITY AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY FIELD<br />

EXPERIENCE. 2 cr. Continu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> 4019. Primary focus is<br />

the applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> public health principles through selected field<br />

experiences in current aspects <strong>of</strong> community dental health<br />

including needs assessment, program planning, and follow-up<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> program success. Prerequisites: 4019, 4021,<br />

4022, 4024, 4033; registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4028, 4029. Sp<br />

4021. CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE. 5 cr. A continu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Dental<br />

Hygiene 4016. Clinical experiences with a variety <strong>of</strong> p<strong>at</strong>ients<br />

including pedi<strong>at</strong>ric, geri<strong>at</strong>ric, and medically and developmentally<br />

compromised. Emphasis on the tre<strong>at</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> the p<strong>at</strong>ient with early<br />

periodontal disease. Prerequisites: 4015, 4016, 4017; registr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

4022. CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE LECTURE. 2 cr. Course to<br />

accompany 4021 presenting inform<strong>at</strong>ion and techniques pertinent<br />

to the assessment and tre<strong>at</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> dental hygiene<br />

p<strong>at</strong>ients. Emphasis on techniques and equipment used in the<br />

tre<strong>at</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> periodontal disease. Consider<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> caries and<br />

periodontal tests and nutritional inform<strong>at</strong>ion in the tre<strong>at</strong>ment <strong>of</strong><br />

clinic p<strong>at</strong>ients. Prerequisite: registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4021. F<br />

4023. SEMINAR. 2 cr. Applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> basic dental and dental hygiene<br />

sciences in developing p<strong>at</strong>ient tre<strong>at</strong>ment plans. Emphasis will<br />

be placed on the evalu<strong>at</strong>ion and synthesis <strong>of</strong> various tre<strong>at</strong>ment<br />

4024-4025. DENTAL HYGIENE PRACTICUM. 3 cr. each. Introduction<br />

to dental hygiene educ<strong>at</strong>ional philosophy and instructional<br />

techniques. Methods <strong>of</strong> teaching, seminar discussions, practical<br />

experiences in clinical and labor<strong>at</strong>ory teaching and evalu<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

program development. Prerequisites for 4024: 4014, 4015, 4016,<br />

4017; registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4021, 4022. Prerequisites for 4025: 4019,<br />

4026. SURVEY OF DENTAL SPECIALTIES. 1 cr. Students learn<br />

the techniques used in the various specialties <strong>of</strong> dentistry<br />

such as periodontics, orthodontics, endodontics, oral surgery,<br />

prosthodontics, and hospital dentistry as they rel<strong>at</strong>e to the<br />

tre<strong>at</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> pedi<strong>at</strong>ric and geri<strong>at</strong>ric p<strong>at</strong>ients. Prerequisites: 4019,<br />
