1001. PRINCIPLES OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE. 2 cr.<br />
Orient<strong>at</strong>ion to the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory science, the<br />
hospital internship, and the many phases <strong>of</strong> labor<strong>at</strong>ory science<br />
encountered in the medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory.<br />
1012. PHLEBOTOMY. 3 cr. Study <strong>of</strong> phlebotomy, pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism,<br />
p<strong>at</strong>ient rel<strong>at</strong>ions, basic medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory terminology, types <strong>of</strong><br />
specimens, specimen collection procedures, complic<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong><br />
venipuncture, adapt<strong>at</strong>ions for special limits and special types <strong>of</strong><br />
p<strong>at</strong>ients, special collection techniques, and actual collection <strong>of</strong><br />
labor<strong>at</strong>ory specimens.<br />
2001. MEDICAL LABORATORY PRINCIPLES AND METHODS. 1<br />
cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory course to instruct students in the principles <strong>of</strong><br />
medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory science and basic labor<strong>at</strong>ory techniques<br />
including proper use <strong>of</strong> the medical microscope, pipetting<br />
techniques, blood and microscopic slide prepar<strong>at</strong>ion, use <strong>of</strong><br />
the spectrophotometer, safety and infection control techniques,<br />
proper use <strong>of</strong> personal protective equipment, venipuncture,<br />
hem<strong>at</strong>ocrit, and proper identific<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> cells and microorganisms<br />

3010. URINALYSIS AND BODY FLUIDS. 3 cr. Lecture and labor<strong>at</strong>ory<br />
course focusing on the an<strong>at</strong>omy, physiology, and p<strong>at</strong>hology<br />
<strong>of</strong> the renal system, with emphasis on concepts rel<strong>at</strong>ed to the<br />
form<strong>at</strong>ion, distribution, and function <strong>of</strong> urine and body fluids and<br />
their physical, chemical, and cellular composition in health and<br />
disease. MLSC majors only. F<br />
3020. HEMATOLOGY. 3 cr. A study <strong>of</strong> hem<strong>at</strong>opoiesis, classific<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />
mechanisms and clinical characteristics <strong>of</strong> the anemias,<br />
leukemias, lymphomas, and other rel<strong>at</strong>ed diseases; the<br />
mechanism and specific disorders <strong>of</strong> hemostasis and a study <strong>of</strong><br />
the principles <strong>of</strong> various hem<strong>at</strong>ological testing procedures and<br />
interpret<strong>at</strong>ions and correl<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> test results with disease st<strong>at</strong>es.<br />

3021. HEMATOLOGY LABORATORY. 1 cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory course to<br />
accompany 3020 to include procedures for a complete blood<br />
count, sediment<strong>at</strong>ion r<strong>at</strong>e, L.E. prep, osmotic fragility, sickle cell<br />
testing, coagul<strong>at</strong>ion testing, various miscellaneous tests and<br />
quality control procedures. Three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisite:<br />

3022. IMMUNOLOGY. 3 cr. A course covering the principles <strong>of</strong> basic<br />
immunology and the applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> clinical immunology in the<br />
medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory to include: immunoglobulin structures;<br />
antigen-antibody reactions, classific<strong>at</strong>ion, mechanisms, and<br />
clinical characteristics <strong>of</strong> immune disease; transplant<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />
tumor immunology; and a study <strong>of</strong> various serological testing<br />
procedures and interpret<strong>at</strong>ion and correl<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> test results with<br />
disease st<strong>at</strong>es. Three hours lecture. Prerequisite: MLSC majors<br />

3023. SEROLOGY LABORATORY. 1 cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory course to<br />
accompany 3022 to include represent<strong>at</strong>ive tests <strong>of</strong> all types <strong>of</strong><br />
serological testing performed in the medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Three<br />
hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisite: MLSC majors only<br />
3024. CLINICAL CHEMISTRY AND TOXICOLOGY. 3 cr. Study <strong>of</strong><br />
physiologic limits and composition <strong>of</strong> various body fluids and their<br />
methods <strong>of</strong> analysis. Three hours lecture. Prerequisite: MLSC<br />

3025. CLINICAL CHEMISTRY AND TOXICOLOGY LABORATORY. 1<br />
cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory course to accompany 3024 including qualit<strong>at</strong>ive<br />
and quantit<strong>at</strong>ive analysis <strong>of</strong> physiologic components and<br />
composition <strong>of</strong> the various components <strong>of</strong> blood and other body<br />
fluids and methods <strong>of</strong> analysis for toxic substances. Three hours<br />

3026. CLINICAL CHEMISTRY AND TOXICOLOGY. 3 cr. Principles<br />
<strong>of</strong> basic clinical chemistry and toxicology procedures applied to<br />
enzymes; endocrine function; electrolytes and blood gases; renal<br />
function; gastric, pancre<strong>at</strong>ic and intestine function; biochemistry<br />
<strong>of</strong> pregnancy; therapeutic drug monitoring and analysis <strong>of</strong> toxic<br />

3027. IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY AND BLOOD BANKING. 3 cr. A<br />
course in the genetic theory <strong>of</strong> the human blood groups and the<br />

experience in pretransfusion comp<strong>at</strong>ibility testing and basic<br />
antibody identific<strong>at</strong>ion and an introduction to donor screening and<br />

3030. MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY I. 4 cr. The morphology, physiology,<br />
and immunogenicity <strong>of</strong> disease-causing bacteria, methods<br />
<strong>of</strong> sol<strong>at</strong>ion, identific<strong>at</strong>ion, susceptibility testing, and control <strong>of</strong><br />
p<strong>at</strong>hogenic bacteria and diseases. Three hours lecture and three<br />

3040. MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE CAPSTONE. 3 cr.<br />
Seminar and management course th<strong>at</strong> includes oral and written<br />
present<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> research on current topics rel<strong>at</strong>ed to labor<strong>at</strong>ory<br />
medicine. Labor<strong>at</strong>ory management topics are analyzed using<br />
case studies and group exercises. Regul<strong>at</strong>ions and laws th<strong>at</strong><br />
impact the medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory are discussed. Prerequisite: MLSC<br />
