4010. ECONOMICS OF AGING. 3 cr. An examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> issues rel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
to the economic st<strong>at</strong>us <strong>of</strong> persons as they grow older. Attention<br />
will be given to problems and policies which rel<strong>at</strong>e to income<br />
maintenance, planned and unplanned expenditures, infl<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />
reduced income, post-retirement employment, public and priv<strong>at</strong>e<br />
pensions, health insurance, pre-retirement employment, public<br />
and priv<strong>at</strong>e pensions, health insurance, pre-retirement counseling<br />
and legisl<strong>at</strong>ive reforms. (Same as ECON 4010)<br />
4011. SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE WITH THE ELDERLY. 3 cr. An<br />
introduction to the social, economic, and psychological<br />
dimensions <strong>of</strong> aging using a person-in-environment approach.<br />

4024. WOMEN AND AGING. 3 cr. Examines the life experiences <strong>of</strong><br />
women as they age. Emphasis is on sociological influences on<br />
perceptions <strong>of</strong> aging among women and on aging women’s roles<br />
in society. (Same as SOCL 4024)<br />
4025. SEMINAR IN DEATH AND DYING. 3 cr. Explor<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
social organiz<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> dying, including a view on cross-cultural<br />
perspectives on de<strong>at</strong>h, tre<strong>at</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> the dying p<strong>at</strong>ient, and the<br />
grief process. (Same as SOCL 4025)<br />
4030. ELDER ABUSE. 3 cr. An examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the definition, causes,<br />
and theories associ<strong>at</strong>ed with the problem <strong>of</strong> elder abuse.<br />
Relevant research regarding the historical perspectives,<br />
recognition <strong>of</strong> abuse, assessment techniques, and interventions<br />
will be presented.<br />
4031. ELDER LAW. 3 cr. An examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> legal challenges older<br />
Americans are facing as they plan their l<strong>at</strong>er years and seek<br />
to maximize their quality <strong>of</strong> life. These challenges include<br />
age discrimin<strong>at</strong>ion in employment, housing altern<strong>at</strong>ives and<br />
options, financial management and planning, medical needs and<br />
<strong>at</strong>tention, and consent, and long-term care.<br />
4035. HOUSING THE ELDERLY. 3 cr. Examin<strong>at</strong>ion and applic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the guidelines, issues and choices associ<strong>at</strong>ed with housing<br />
disruption and re-loc<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the elderly. (Same as FCSC 4035)<br />
4036. NUTRITION AND AGING. 3 cr. Applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> basic concepts <strong>of</strong><br />
nutrition directed toward improving nutritional st<strong>at</strong>us and health.<br />
Federal, st<strong>at</strong>e and community programs will be discussed. (Same<br />
as FCSC 4036.)<br />
4052. QUALITATIVE RESEARCH. 3 cr. An examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> different<br />
types <strong>of</strong> qualit<strong>at</strong>ive research, techniques <strong>of</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a collection,<br />
analysis, and present<strong>at</strong>ion, and ethical issues; explor<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
strengths and limit<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> this type <strong>of</strong> interpretive work. (Same<br />
as SOCL 4052.)<br />
4075. TEACHING CHILDREN ABOUT AGING. 3 cr. An evalu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />
pre-school, elementary and secondary school liter<strong>at</strong>ure, class<br />
projects, video tapes and fe<strong>at</strong>ure films th<strong>at</strong> focus on various<br />
issues rel<strong>at</strong>ed to aging. The focus is to identify methods and<br />
mechanisms th<strong>at</strong> enhance children’s images <strong>of</strong> older persons and<br />
growing older.<br />

Required for a major in Health Studies with an option<br />
in Pre-Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Health Studies: HLST 2001, 2002,<br />
3001, 3002, 3003, 3004, 4001, 4003 or 4002, 4005 or<br />
4006 plus an additional 16 guided electives. Health<br />
Studies students and academic advisors select from<br />
electives th<strong>at</strong> strengthen career options in the health<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essions area. Total <strong>of</strong> 38 semester hours.<br />

2001. HEALTHCARE ISSUES. 1 cr. This course provides students<br />
with an overview <strong>of</strong> the healthcare delivery system, including the<br />
roles <strong>of</strong> healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and healthcare organiz<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />
Through the use <strong>of</strong> didactic and experiential techniques, the<br />
students will explore issues regarding healthcare insurance,<br />
people who are uninsured and underserved, managed care,<br />
and changes in the healthcare marketplace. It also discusses<br />
the role <strong>of</strong> health promotion, disease prevention, and the uses<br />
<strong>of</strong> altern<strong>at</strong>ive and complementary medicines. Prerequisites:<br />

2002. HEALTHCARE INFORMATICS. 3 cr. This course provides<br />
an overview <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ion systems in healthcare<br />
organiz<strong>at</strong>ions. Emphasis is placed on understanding how<br />
evidence-based research is integr<strong>at</strong>ed into clinical decisionmaking<br />
and recognizing how inform<strong>at</strong>ion systems influence<br />
health outcomes. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing. F, Sp<br />
2007. NUTRITION. 3 cr. Applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> basic nutrition<br />
throughout the life cycle. Emphasis is on the rel<strong>at</strong>ionship <strong>of</strong><br />

3001. HEALTHCARE ETHICS. 3 cr. This course is designed to<br />
introduce ethical thinking and concepts regarding healthcare<br />
to prepare the student to understand, evalu<strong>at</strong>e, and particip<strong>at</strong>e<br />
in ethical decision-making. Coursework presents pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
codes <strong>of</strong> ethics using group discussions. Ethic rel<strong>at</strong>ed topics<br />
to be included such as genetics, transplants, cloning, etc.<br />
Prerequisites: PSYC 2001 or SOCL 1001 or 1002. F, Sp, Su<br />
3002. SOCIAL EPIDEMIOLOGY. 3 cr. This course provides students<br />
with an introduction to social and behavioral factors as<br />
determinants <strong>of</strong> health. Students explore theories <strong>of</strong> human<br />
behavior and group behavior, as well as health behavior<br />
change models. The course presents a comprehensive view<br />
<strong>of</strong> health and community concerns experienced by people.<br />
The inter-rel<strong>at</strong>ionship <strong>of</strong> biological, socio-cultural, behavioral,<br />
environmental, and economic risk factors <strong>of</strong> popul<strong>at</strong>ion groups<br />
