4036. DENDROLOGY. 4 cr. Classific<strong>at</strong>ion, identific<strong>at</strong>ion, and<br />
characteristics <strong>of</strong> important forest trees <strong>of</strong> the United St<strong>at</strong>es,<br />
stressing n<strong>at</strong>ive species common to <strong>Louisiana</strong>. Two hours<br />
lecture and four hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory including frequent field trips.<br />

4040. TAXONOMY OF VASCULAR PLANTS. 4 cr. Characteristics<br />
<strong>of</strong> plant families are emphasized. This includes classific<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
systems and emphasis on primitive and advanced characteristics.<br />
Most <strong>of</strong> the lab is devoted to identific<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> plants by using keys<br />
from plant identific<strong>at</strong>ion manuals Two hours lecture and four<br />
hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisite: "C" or better in 2004 or 2030.<br />
4044. PLANT ECOLOGY. 4 cr. The study <strong>of</strong> plant popul<strong>at</strong>ions and<br />
communities and their habit<strong>at</strong> with emphasis on the communities<br />
<strong>of</strong> the south central United St<strong>at</strong>es. Three hours lecture and three<br />
hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisite: "C" or better in 3002.<br />
4051. FIELD BIOLOGY. 6 cr. Field studies <strong>of</strong> the flora and fauna n<strong>at</strong>ive<br />
to selected habit<strong>at</strong>s. Field trip fee required. Prerequisites: "C" or<br />
better in 2004, 2005, 2010; or "C" or better in 2030; or approval <strong>of</strong><br />
department head.<br />
4060. PATHOGENIC BACTERIOLOGY. 3 cr. The morphology,<br />
physiology, and immunogenecity <strong>of</strong> disease-causing bacteria;<br />
methods <strong>of</strong> isol<strong>at</strong>ion, identific<strong>at</strong>ion and control <strong>of</strong> p<strong>at</strong>hogenic<br />
bacteria and diseases. Three hours lecture. Prerequisites: "C" or<br />
better in 2014, 2015.<br />
4062. FOOD AND DAIRY MICROBIOLOGY. 3 cr. The role <strong>of</strong><br />
microorganisms in the preserv<strong>at</strong>ion, spoilage and poisoning in<br />
food and dairy products. Also, their role in the manufacture <strong>of</strong><br />
products <strong>of</strong> agricultural origin. Prerequisites: "C" or better in 2014;<br />
credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4063.<br />
4063. FOOD AND DAIRY MICRO LABORATORY. 1 cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory<br />
course to accompany 4062. Three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisite:<br />
Credit with "C" or better or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4062.<br />
4064. WATER MANAGEMENT. 3 cr. A survey <strong>of</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er distribution<br />
and uses, including w<strong>at</strong>er purific<strong>at</strong>ion and sewage tre<strong>at</strong>ment,<br />
industrial and agricultural, irrig<strong>at</strong>ion scheduling.<br />
4066. ADVANCED MICROBIOLOGY. 3 cr. Advanced microbiological<br />
techniques; a study <strong>of</strong> the morphological, physiological, and<br />
genetic characteristics <strong>of</strong> important groups <strong>of</strong> microorganisms;<br />
introduction to biotechnology. Two hours lecture and two hours<br />
labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisites:"C" or better in 2014, 2015; 8 semester<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> chemistry.<br />
4068. GENERAL VIROLOGY. 3 cr. A study <strong>of</strong> represent<strong>at</strong>ive bacterial,<br />
animal and plant viruses. Prerequisite: "C" or better in 2014.<br />
4069. GENERAL VIROLOGY LABORATORY. 1 cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory to<br />
accompany 4068. Three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisite: "C" or<br />

4070. IMMUNOLOGY - CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES. 3 cr. Detailed<br />
discussion <strong>of</strong> the cellular and humoral components <strong>of</strong> the immune<br />
system and their interrel<strong>at</strong>ionships in the production and control,<br />
<strong>at</strong> both the genetic and cellular levels, <strong>of</strong> immune responses.<br />
Prerequisites: "C" or better in 2014 or 1015 or 3012 or permission<br />
<strong>of</strong> the instructor.<br />
4072. INTRODUCTORY PARASITOLOGY. 3 cr. The taxonomy, life<br />
history, and economic importance <strong>of</strong> protozoa, helminths, and<br />
arthropods which are parasites <strong>of</strong> man. Prerequisites: "C" or<br />
better in 1022 or 2014 or permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor; credit with<br />
"C" or better or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4073.<br />

4084. ORNITHOLOGY. 3 cr. Morphology, taxonomy, behavior, and<br />

4086. GAME BIRDS. 4 cr. Recognition, life histories, pred<strong>at</strong>ors,<br />
economics and management practices <strong>of</strong> North American game<br />
birds. Three hours lecture and three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory with field<br />
trips. Prerequisites: "C" or better in an introductory course in<br />
Biology and permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor.<br />
4088. GAME MAMMALS AND FUR BEARERS. 4 cr. Recognition,<br />
life histories, pred<strong>at</strong>ors, economics and management practices<br />
<strong>of</strong> game mammals and fur bearers with special emphasis on<br />
regional fauna. Three hours lecture and three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory<br />
with field trips. Prerequisites: "C" or better in an introductory<br />
course in Biology and permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor.<br />
4096. COOPERATIVE INTERNSHIPS. 1-3 cr. Closely supervised<br />
practical experience working in agencies/businesses th<strong>at</strong> employ<br />
biologists. Only junior and senior majors and gradu<strong>at</strong>e students<br />
are eligible. Students will receive grades <strong>of</strong> CR (credit) or NC<br />
(no credit). Students may repe<strong>at</strong> this course for a total <strong>of</strong> 3<br />
credits; not to exceed 6 credits total in combin<strong>at</strong>ion with 4003.<br />
The course may not be used by gradu<strong>at</strong>e students to fulfill major<br />
requirements.<br />
4097. UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PARTICIPATION. 3 cr. An<br />
honors course in which the student performs independent<br />
